Have I mentioned before that my prelims are a real downer?
Today I read a history of slavery and revolt in San Domingo. In order to gain independence, the slaves of San Domingo fought off the French, the Spanish, the British, and the colonials who were already there, all at the same time. That's how bad they wanted freedom. A word to the wise: If you are a big powerful country with the most superior military forces known in the industrialized world, do not foolishly try to occupy a land that promises you endless economic benefits and secures your position in the global play of power and think for one second that the native inhabitants of that land will not die to make sure you go the fuck away, nor think twice about killing you because everytime one of you dies, it's one step closer to securing independence--real independence.
Violence begets violence. It's interesting how the most ingenious methods of torture and atrocity were developed not by the "savages" of dark countries, but by the polite society of civilized occidentals.
